CHARLOTTE -- Mecklenburg County had the highest number of deadly crashes in the state in 2011. AAA of the Carolinas reported 67 crashes last year, up from 46 in 2010.

"You have a mixture of people who know the roads well and people who don't even know where they are going," said Tom Crosby with AAA of the Carolinas.

AAA released its annual dangerous county analysis. The report identifies the most dangerous counties based on vehicle miles traveled.

"We have a significant amount of people who are from out of the area, we have a confusing road system and so all of that increases our chances of being in a fatal crash," said Angel Daley with AAA.

In 2011, there were 67 deadly crashes in Mecklenburg County up from 46 in 2010. However, the overall number of crashes in state is down.

Leaders say that could change during next month's DNC convention.

"It's confusing today," said Crosby. "Add congestion, our poor street network, the fact that people have never been here before and you are going to have the potential for some serious problems."

Leaders with AAA says when it comes to traveling, people should plan ahead during the DNC even if they are familiar with the area.

"Today with the GPS, with maps, plan it ahead of time so that you don't get confused. The new road plan that they are going to have for the DNC, get a copy in advance to make sure you know your road plan in advance," said Crosby.
