MONROE -- The Monroe Police Department plans to send nearly a third of its police force to Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention.
 
Police Chief Debra Duncan said 33 of her officers are committed to assisting Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police provide security during the event.
 
Duncan said those officers have already received their assignments and specialized training in Alabama.
 
“They trained down there for a week, and they also had to complete some online training,” said Duncan. “So it isn't that we're just saying to our officers 'Just go to Charlotte.' They are going to be trained and have specific assignments.”
 
The Statesville Police Department is allocating 9 officers to help with security, Gaston County Police is sending 10, and the Shelby Police Department will be giving up 8 officers to the convention.
 
Cleveland County Sheriff's office officials said they won't be sending any deputies to the convention but they will provide aid to neighboring Gaston County if needed. They said security plans for their area will be finalized Wednesday.
 
They said what is final is all North Carolina law enforcement agencies are expected to be on stand-by.
