SPRING LAKE, N.C. -- Funeral services for a soldier killed in action will be held Friday in Spring Lake. Spc. Trevor Adkins, 21, was killed earlier this month in Afghanistan. He was recently posthumously promoted from Private First Class.

Adkins was a military police officer and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, but he grew up in Spring Lake.

Thursday, Adkins family welcomed his body home. Adkins was one of six soldiers killed by an IED explosion in Afghanistan earlier this month. This was his first combat deployment since joining the military in August of 2010. Adkins body was taken from Pope Field to Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake where funeral services will be held Friday.

Friday's service will be held at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Adcock Funeral Home off Lillington Highway in Spring Lake, followed by the burial at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetary.
