SPRING LAKE, N.C. -- A soldier killed in action was welcomed home to his home town of Spring Lake Thursday. Spc. Trevor Adkins, 21, was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month.

Adkins was a military police officer and stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. This was his first combat deployment since joining the military in August of 2010.

His mother says he volunteered to be a part of this mission and says she is proud of her son and what he did for our country.

"There is a lot of pride and there is still always going to be some sadness at the same time that he is gone," said Carolyn Haines. "But it's all about American pride. These soldiers are putting their lives on the line so we can be free."

Funeral services for Adkins will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake.
