CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. – A man accused of shooting and killing his stepfather is due in court Monday.

Matthew Safrit, 21, is accused of shooting Scott Cloninger, 41, at a home on Sam Lattimore Road in Cleveland County on Friday during a fight over a car. Safrit is also accused of stabbing his mother.

Authorities said a K-9 officer bit Safrit when he ran from the scene. Safrit is charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries and assaulting a K-9.
