CHARLOTTE -- The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is rolling out a new tool to catch delinquent taxpayers.

Two patrol cars are outfitted with license plate recognize cameras. The cameras are programmed to identify the owners of vehicles who are at least five months late paying their vehicles taxes.

Mecklenburg County Tax Collector Neal Dixon says the owners of those identified and tagged vehicles will have two days to pay.

“If the bill is not paid within that timeframe, other measures will be taken to collect the tax due including a warrant for the vehicle to be seized and sold at auction,” said Dixon.

Dixon says there are about 75,000 unpaid tax bills worth $9 million in Mecklenburg County. That's a delinquency rate of about 30 percent.
