CHARLOTTE – School is out for summer but some students in Charlotte are learning about the importance of reading
Mayor Anthony Foxx read to children in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools' summer literacy program this morning. Foxx talked to the students about how reading can give jumpstart in all areas of life.
"Reading is such a fundamental skill in our society, so they are getting, through this program, people coming in from a variety of backgrounds, who are teaching them that reading really is fundamental to a good education," said Mayor Foxx.
Experts say academic losses over the summer are greatest among low-income children. The literacy program aims to help students maintain their skills during that break.
