VIRGINIA — A 12-year-old girl from the Charlotte area drowned Friday morning in Virginia.

Authorities say the incident happened while swimming with her family in Smith Mountain Lake. Officials have not released the victim's name but said she was on a float, fell off and then went under.

Her family searched the water but could not find her. Firefighters used Sonar to locate her body.
