CHARLOTTE — Monday is the first day on the job for the new Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison.

It is slated to be a busy day as Morrison tours more classrooms in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district. The new superintendent said listening to district employees, students and parents is his top priority.

Morrison will start the day meeting with bus drivers and mechanics. Then he will visit Independence High School, Endhaven Elementary, Albemarle Road Elementary and Statesville Road Elementary.

All of the sites host summer school, camps or other activities. Morrison drafted what the district calls an Entry Plan that lays out his efforts to get to know the people, culture and problems at CMS. The plan tackles issues such as the student achievement gap and communication problems in the district.

After this listening tour and other meetings, the new superintendent will deliver a report to the school board and start talking about changes he wants to make in the system.

Dr. Morrison is working to interview and hire top administrators to round out his team at CMS. He said it is going to be a busy summer. The start of the new school year is a little less than 60 days away.
