WINSTON-SALEM -- With summer break in full swing officials are worried many kids may not be getting the nutrition they need. That's why school districts like Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools offer free meals to kids under 18. It's a program thousands are kids are taking advantage of each day.

Even though it's summer, Diggs-Latham Elementary is a busy place. It's one of a dozen summer feeding sites in Forsyth County. Between breakfast and lunch, more than 600 students are here everyday.

“And it's been extremely successful, we have kids who come by bus, we have kids who walk, we have kids whose parents bring them to take advantage of the nutritious lunch and breakfast that's offered here,” Diggs-Latham Elementary Principal Donna Cannon said.

Any child 18 or under can go to one of the sites and get a free meal. Officials say this may be the only time many of these kids get to eat each day.

“And it's been well documented that there are kids during the school year who don't have enough to eat, who need help by eating breakfast and lunch during school. That type of hunger, that type of need doesn't go away during the summer,” Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools spokesperson Theo Helm said.

The summer meals are paid for with federal funding, it's the same money that helps kids eat through out the school year. Officials say they just want to make sure families are taking advantage of this program.

"We feed about a thousand each day and our goal is to make that a bigger number. And that's why we're offering transportation to try and get people to come in,” Helm said, “there are camps in the area that will bring their kids in to eat. we want to get as many kids as we can to eat."
