GREENSBORO -- Officials at Guilford County Schools say students will be getting more fruits and vegetables in their school lunches. But, they'll have to pay more for the healthier options. The menu changes are all a part of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.

These are the first major changes to the school lunch guidelines in 30 years. Starting this fall, there will be differences in the variety and amount of food given in school lunches.

Under the new guidelines all students will be required to take one fruit or vegetable each day. Right now they can choose from any combination of milk, fruit, vegetable, meat, meat alternative or grain with out any restrictions.

Along with the changes in produce, grain products must be whole grain rich and milk has to be fat free or low fat.

These changes do come with a price tag. The guidelines require districts to raise prices.

All students will pay now $2.50. That's up 10 cents for middle school students and 20 cents for elementary students..

The price changes will not affect those students who are on free and reduced lunches, which school leaders say make up 56 percent of all GCS students.

Changes in the breakfast menu under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act will go into affect for the 2013-2014 school year.
