HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- A new school is being built in Huntersville. Parents, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders and town officials broke ground Tuesday. It's the first Charlotte-Mecklenburg school construction in two years.

Located on Stumptown Road, the elementary school will have nearly 40 classrooms and provide some much needed relief for the overcrowding at Torrence Creek Elementary.

"There are as many trailers outside of Torrence Creek as their are classrooms inside. So we have double the population," said Rhonda Lennon, a CMS School Board member from District 1. "The school is so overcrowded that it's actually being split. Half the kids are going to stay at Torrence Creek, the other half are going to come to this new facility when it opens in August of 2013."

The new school has not yet been named. The CMS Board of Education approved the school location as part of the 2007 bond package with the construction contract awarded last month at a cost of over $11 million.
