Researchers are working on a way to sterilize air....female smokers may be more at risk for lung cancer than men and your heartburn may be trying to tell you something.
Air Sterilizer
Instead of taking months to purify air contaminated with anthrax, a new device takes mere minutes. University at Buffalo researchers developed the BioBlowerâ„¢ to destroy anthrax, influenza and other pathogens that can float through the air. BioBlower sucks in air and rapidly heats it to more than 200 degrees. The rapid heating kills nearly 100 percent of biotoxins in a single pass. The air is then cooled and can be cycled back into a room or a building. Future tests will determine The BioBlower's effectiveness against viruses and chemical agents.
Lung Cancer Genetics
An estrogen-activating enzyme may help explain why female smokers are more susceptible to lung cancer. Researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia found that an enzyme called CYP1B1 is present at 13 times the expected rate when smoke is introduced to women's lungs. The enzyme activates a form of estrogen naturally produced in the body. More investigation is needed to confirm an estrogen-link to lung cancer.
