Cabarrus Rescue Squad to cease emergency response services
The Cabarrus Rescue Squad has decided to end its emergency response services. After years of declining funding and volunteers, the squad's chief, Mike Pattee, decided to end operations. Pattee volunteered for the squad for 15 years, before deciding to end operations after a unanimous vote from its members.

Residents, officials gather in Charlotte to discuss priorities over breakfast
Roughly 100 elected officials and south Charlotte residents gathered at the Ballantyne Resort Saturday morning as a part of the Ballantyne Breakfast Club's "Priority Meeting.” City, county, and state officials filled the room and were available to hear the positives, concerns, or simply to meet with residents in person.

Maine GOP Chairman: Mitt Romney wins Maine caucuses
Maine's Republican Party Chairman said GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney won the Maine caucuses by a slim margin. The victory came after Romney lost three other contests during the past week.

Cupid Cup 5K races off in Charlotte for heart disease awareness
Runners hit the pavement in Charlotte on Saturday morning for a good cause. It's a part of the seventh annual Cupid's Cup 5K in the Freedom Park area. Participants in Saturday's race hope to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, as it is one of the leading causes of death in America.

Area young people hold mock trials, test legal skills
Teenagers put their courtroom skills to the test Saturday as part of the Assistance League of Charlotte's mock trial competition. The kids regularly take part in teen court, putting their peers on trial for misdemeanor crimes.

NC Powerball jackpot hits record at $325 million
Anyone who wants to hit the jackpot, now may be the time to buy their lottery ticket. The North Carolina Powerball has hit its highest total ever, at $325 million. If someone wins, they will have the option to get paid every year for 30 years, or in a lump sum of over $200 million after taxes.

Home foreclosures could increase during 2012
People could be seeing more foreclosure signs throughout the year. Experts say banks were waiting until the recent mortgage settlement was passed before moving forward with any more foreclosures. The settlement only helps some homeowners at risk of foreclosure, those not covered in the agreement could lose their homes soon.

American Indoor Football League begins tryouts
The NFL season just wrapped up, but people can still get their football fix. The American indoor football league starts its season next week and a new team is on the schedule, the North Carolina Force. The team held try-outs Saturday in Charlotte. Catholics still concerned with contraceptives mandate
Friday President Obama announced a compromise on the federal mandate requiring employers, even religious organizations, to provide contraceptives to workers who want them. Under the compromise, health insurers - not employers - will be required to offer and pay for women's' contraceptive care, including morning-after pills.

Belmont Abbey leader calls Obama compromise 'fake'
The president of Belmont Abbey College is calling President Barack Obama's contraceptive compromise disingenuous and fake. Dr. Bill Theirfelder said the college will continue to move forward with its lawsuit. During a press conference Friday, Obama said his new plan will make insurance companies responsible for providing contraceptive coverage and not religious organizations.

CMS school carries on after program funding cut
Supporters at one Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary school are keeping a popular mentoring program alive. J.H. Gunn and other elementary schools are no longer a part of the “Right Moves For Youth” program, which provides mentoring and outreach programs. But just because the program's name and funding went away from some schools, it is staying afloat and thriving at J.H. Gunn.

Miles Plumlee had 13 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, and No. 10 Duke pulled away to beat Maryland 73-55 on Saturday. Seth Curry scored 19 points and Mason Plumlee added 16 points and 10 rebounds while big brother Miles became the first Duke player with 20 rebounds since Elton Brand in 1998.
