KANNAPOLIS, N.C.--Students and teachers at a Kannapolis high school are coping with the death of a student.

It's the first day back in class since friends of 16-year-old Christopher Overcash learned of his tragic death on Saturday.

The mood was "somber" on Monday morning at A.L. Brown, as the school's principal put it.

The news is still fresh for many of the students and teachers and several of them were fighting tears in the halls on Monday morning.

Overcash died Saturday on an outing with his Boy Scout troop.

Overcash and a group of scouts were hiking on Stone Mountain in Wilkes County when he slipped and fell from the summit.

Students were signing a banner in the halls outside of Overcash's algebra class on Monday.

His teacher said they spent the class just dealing with this loss.

“I put in a movie to try and get their mind off it and told them they could sit anywhere because for the people who sat beside him I knew that would be hard," said Traci Pizzuto.

Counselors were on campus Monday talking with students.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be made.
