GREENSBORO -- It's the second day of tournament play at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club Friday.

As the players take to the course, they're reaping the benefits of some big changes on the greens.

There are big changes this year for players looking to make that money shot on the green.

“We knew this tournament was going to be in August for several years so, we decided to attract the top field and make it fun for them. They've always like the golf course, the pros only comments have been the greens are a little spongy in August because of the water we have to put on them,” McConnell Golf CEO John McConnell said.

As part of a half-million dollar in changes to the course, club owners decided to upgrade the club's greens to a more sturdy grass.

“This grass is made for hot weather and also this grass is made to play firmer and faster in the summertime. We can play a lot of golf, we don't have to worry about limiting the rounds of golf or damaging the greens due to high amounts of traffic,” Golf Course Superintendent Keith Wood said.

Staff made all these changes in less than three months. Just 11 weeks ago these greens were dirt and now they're PGA quality.

“It takes quite a few hours just to get the greens cut, not only mowing the greens but we have to fertilize, we have to water we have to top dress. There's quite a bit of labor to maintaining a putting green to championship quality,” Wood said.

McConnell said he hopes the changes will help position the Wyndham Championship for future success.

“What Carl Pettersson told me last year, I said how do you choose the places to play? He said it's not about the purse John, it's about the golf course,” McConnell said.

Officials point out that because of the changes they've made they expect some low scores during the tournament.
