HAMPTONVILLE, N.C. -- Junior Johnson's 10,000-square-foot home and nearly 150-acre cattle farm have a new owner. The 81-Year-old racing legend sold the Yadkin County property at public auction just weeks after he and his wife moved to Charlotte.

Johnson placed his home and cattle farm on the market in January for $6.1 million. In the end, it fetched $2.3 million plus a 7 percent buyer's premium. It was not a surprise to the auctioneer.

"The economy, the economy and the economy,” said Thomas McInnis of Iron Horse Auction Company. “This proves today that premiere property is still weak."

Johnson's broker said given the state of the real estate market, it was not a bad deal.

"Comparing it with all the other homes in the area in the Triad it will be, as we see right now, probably the highest priced home sold in the Triad this year," said John-Mark Mitchell.

The property could have sold in nine pieces, but eventually sold as one. It was just like Junior Johnson wanted it.

"This farm stays together,” said McInnis. “It is bought by a family who is going to live here, who plans to put cattle in the pastures and they plan to use this farm just like Junior and Lisa built it."

Johnson said his health factored into his decision to sell the farm and home. Mitchell believed there would always be a special place in Johnson's heart for the area.

"I think he'll always be here,” said Mitchell. “You'll see him in the barbecue places. You can see his pictures up in the barbecue houses around town. He's definitely staying in North Carolina."

Iron Horse sold Johnson's farm equipment and some of his memorabilia at a separate auction last month.
