WINSTON-SALEM -- Tens of thousands will hit the stores this weekend hoping to take advantage of North Carolina's tax free weekend. But as your bargain hunting gets underway, officials say there are ways to make every dollar go further.

The Goodwill is known for its bargains and deals and officials say this weekend is no different. The stores have been gearing up for shoppers, stocking the shelves with new and gently used items. Each week the stores hang about 7,000 articles of clothing.

The Department of Revenue says the state is expected to lose about $13.6 million but that boils down to savings for savvy back to school shoppers. Officials say that's just one of many reasons to choose the Goodwill this tax free weekend.

"You get great deals, and it's likely not going to be as crowded as the mall because that's where everyone is going and expects to go," said Thomas Royal with Goodwill Industries. "You're also going to be spending money somewhere that goes back to job training and placement services and it stays right in the community."

There are some rules to remember about the tax free weekend. You can buy clothing, footwear and school supplies that are less than $100 per item. Tablets and computers are also tax free up to $3,500. E-readers do not qualify to be tax free.
