RALEIGH -- Three young men died after a horrific accident in southeast Raleigh near Clayton.

The accident happened on Rock Quarry Road when 21-year-old Devin Mosteller was driving with friends, and his Saturn SUV went down an embankment and crashed into a tree.

His passengers, 18-year-old Christopher Pretty and 19-year-old Adonis Banks were also killed in the crash.

Mosteller's car crashed in Michael Turnage's front yard on Rock Quarry Road.

"We were inside and my wife heard a screeching noise and loud boom. I didn't hear it, had my headphones on," said Turnage. "After I called 911, they asked me to see if anyone was responsive in the vehicle...so I did that, and there was no response from any of the young men."

All three young men were pronounced dead on the scene. Turnage said as soon as he ran outside and saw the vehicle, he feared the worst.

"To be honest when I saw the damage I kinda knew, there was no way they could survive that," he said. "It was horrific."

Dodd Webster taught Banks at Riverwood Middle School in Clayton, and said he was a gifted basketball player and well-liked by his peers.

"He was very outgoing, and Chris was too," he said. "Yeah, they were very popular in high school."

Troopers have not yet determined the cause of the accident, but motor vehicle deaths among this age group are not uncommon. Vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death for youths aged 15-24, and males are twice as likely to die in these accidents than females.

Turnage just became a father three months ago, and says when he looks back on that age, he feels like he dodged a few bullets.

"That age group, 16-25, it's almost luck, making it," he said. "Even if you're not living a certain type of life, doing bad stuff. I'm talking regular stuff. It just lets you know, it doesn't take but a second for something to go wrong. This really hit home with me."
