DANBURY, N.C. – Stokes County residents continue to urge county commissioners to reject a zoning request they say will bring toxic waste to the area.

Kent Fulp and his wife have requested a rezoning permit allowing them to treat contaminated soil on their property off Frye Road. During public comments at Monday night's commission meeting, opponents were steadfast in commissioners rejecting the permit.

"We're asking the commissioners to deny issuing this permit. We do not want this toxic waste soil treatment facility among our beautiful farms, country homes and recreational facilities in northern Stokes County," said resident Al Engler.

The Fulps said in a statement, “This landfarm will be strictly governed by regulatory agencies. We will only accept non-hazard contaminated soil. We are planning a community meeting to educate our community members and hopefully waylay any concerns that they may have."

The county's planning board said its studying the request. County commissioners are awaiting a recommendation from the board.
