WINSTON-SALEM—Hanes Magnet School in Winston-Salem hosted a STEM night Wednesday.

Students showed off hundreds of projects relating to science, technology, engineering and math. Educators say the program helps kids learn lessons they can not always get in the classroom.

Students said they get to explore careers they might be interested in.

"My inspiration for this was my little brother. I want to be a geneticist when I grow up, so I really enjoy studying this so I can eventually one day help improve other syndromes," said seventh-grader Sofia Pauca.

School officials said one of the goals of the program is to have the students learn by doing.

"They identified a problem and tested that problem and that's the way we need to train kids to think. Not just to fill in a multiple choice test, but to identify problems and solutions and this is what a STEM fair is all about, allowing them to practice that," said Magnet Coordinator Andrew Kraft.

This was the second year for the event.
