GREENSBORO—The last U.S. soldier to die in the Iraq war is from the Triad.

Army Spec. David Hickman, 23, was a Fort Bragg paratrooper from Greensboro. He graduated from Northeast Guilford High School where he was captain of the football team.

Hickman joined the Army in 2009. He died Nov. 14 in an IED explosion, just weeks before he was scheduled to come home. That marked the last U.S. casualty in the war that officially ended Thursday.

Nearly 4,500 American troops died during the war.
