HIGH POINT — High Point University is teaming up with Open Door Ministries and donating extra food from their campus.

The University has 12 dining halls on campus and officials say lots of food can end up going to waste. Now they are helping some of the people who need it most in the community. In any given week, about 100 pounds of prepared food used to go to waste at High Point University.

“We've had a cafeteria of course, and kids living on campus and food that's prepared every day. Most of which is consumed but some that is not consumed,” said High Point University VP of Community Relations, Don Scarborough.

However the unused food is receiving a new purpose; feeding the local residents in the community who have nothing to eat.

“What we do is we have packages that we date and put what it is and how many pounds. So when the shelter picks it up they know exactly what they're getting and they can put their meals together for the day,” said High Point University Aramark Food Service Director Pete Mandala.

Open Door Ministries is working with the University, accepting the donations.

“You put together a little bit here and a little bit there and all of sudden we've got a meal,” said Executive Director Steve Key with Open Door Ministries.

Key said the program could not come at a better time. Their table is always full with people in need of a meal. He said they serve approximately 12,000 meals a month.

The University is tracking all of the donations through an online system. In four weeks they have been able to donate about 600 pounds of food.
