ASHEBORO, N.C. – Job seekers in the Triad got a chance to impress potential employers at a job fair Thursday. Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation co-hosted the event at the Asheboro Boys and Girls club.

About a dozen businesses with open positions were on hand to meet with those looking for work.

"I haven't really had any luck at all," said Billy Nance, who has been on the job hunt for more than a year.

Nance has reached out to Goodwill Industries for help with career counseling and resume building.

"I'm very optimistic about today," he said.

The double-digit unemployment rate through much of the state has not discriminated.

"Our job seekers are extremely diverse. We have all ages. We have all backgrounds," said Susan Steinberger, who is with Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina.

Brandon Shumate said he's just recently joined the job hunt but he's just as frustrated as the others who are unemployed.

"I applied for four jobs already and I haven't gotten a reply back yet," he said.

Companies with representatives at the job fair said they're looking for motivated individuals with experience in their fields.

"When you come in the door, you have to be able to tell us what you're going to bring to United Brass Works. What you're going to bring into the company," said Natasha Trogdon with United Brass Works, Inc.

It's just some of the advice the unemployed are taking to heart in hopes of landing a job.

"This is a lot more helpful than being at home and filling this stuff out on the computer. When you can go directly to them and they can see the person," said Shumate.
