Mt. AIRY, N.C. – Thursday marked the first official day of this year's Mayberry Days event in Surry County.

The four day, annual event in downtown Mt. Airy gets bigger and better every year, with thousands coming from all over the country to celebrate The Andy Griffith Show. Celebrities from the show came together Wednesday night for a special kick off party.

Fans of the show are sure to meet one of them at this year's event. There are more players from the show at this year's festival than any other year.

"Every time it comes up, you think there's so much to do,” said Betty Lynn, who played Thelma Lou on the show. “I always get excited, and it's always good to see all of the people that were on the show."

“I love seeing the fans,” said Maggie Peterson, who played Charlene Darling on the show. “It's just like coming home to family. I feel like people who love the show are just like family."
