BURLINGTON — The world may seem to revolve around technology in contemporary society, but not every child is offered the same electronic opportunities.
For that reason, the non-profit organization Kramden Institute is donating nearly 100 computers to needy children at Newlin Elementary School in Burlington. Select third, fourth and fifth graders brought home their computers on Thursday afternoon.
It is the first time many of the students involved in the project have had a home computer. Volunteers from Elon University were at the school on Thursday, teaching kids and parents how to use their new computers.
For a school that serves many low-income families, Newlin Elementary Principal Larry Conte said the program helps the students have an equal opportunity at advancement.
"They need to believe that they have the same chance everybody else does, to go to college, to take advantage of opportunities that we have here," said Conte.
Kramden Institute has donated computers to schools across North Carolina.
