BURLINGTON –- Hurricane Earl came and went, and the North Carolina coast was spared.

A majority of vacationers are still heading East for the long Labor Day weekend. People could be seen at rest stops and along the roads as they headed down to the beach to begin their long-awaited vacation with the hurricane out of their sight. However, AAA Carolinas said people may make some adjustments.

"It's quite likely that people heading to North Carolina beaches may head to South Carolina beaches," said AAA Spokesman Brendan Byrnes.

Before Earl came on the scene, AAA predicted that 930,000 North Carolinians would travel over the long holiday weekend. That's up eight percent from last year. And most of the travelers who talked to News 14 Carolina said Hurricane Earl will have little impact on their weekend plans.

The State Highway Patrol said that they do not plan on altering their routine either.

“We're going to continue to do what we normally do as far as traffic," said Trooper Greg Ingram. “We will be out targeting impaired driving, and we'll actually continue to be out doing our normal traffic routine."
