LEXINGTON, N.C. – A tanker truck loaded with hazardous chemicals overturned on a Davidson County highway Tuesday morning.

No one was hurt, but the incident caused a spill that forced evacuations in the surrounding area.

Owned by Quality Carriers, the truck was just yards from its destination, Kurz Transfer Products in the 4900 block of North N.C. Highway 150. The truck overturned, causing a spill that prompted shutdown of the highway and evacuations within 1,000 feet.

"It's been about a dozen households and about six businesses," said Doug Lowe, director of Davidson County Emergency Services. "We're pretty comfortable with the distance that we evacuated from."

The truck was transporting thousands of gallons of four chemicals including methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, ethanol and toluene, which Lowe said posed the greatest risk.

"It is highly flammable and humidity can even set it off, and that's what we're trying to control right now," Lowe said.

John and Ruby Tucker live outside the evacuation perimeter, but their son was still concerned about their safety.

"I'm really concerned about it because it's right down the road, a half-mile away, so, that really concerns me," said John Tucker Jr. "Everybody in the community is probably worried about it 'cause they have to live up here."

Meanwhile, firefighters applied foam to the spill in preparation for cleanup and a medical team stood by.

"In case there are any other issues that occur, especially with the hazmat teams that are going in," said Lowe. "Those suits that they're wearing or the protection that they have to wear can stress the firefighters very fast."

Eight fire companies responded to the scene. They were joined by the North Carolina hazmat response team and several other agencies.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified the driver of the truck as 57-year-old Morris Glozier of Mooresville. Glozier was not injured in the incident, which was under investigation.
