RALEIGH -- The Wake County school board has placed Superintendent Del Burns on administrative leave.
Burns announced his resignation on Feb. 16 and said his last day would be in June. But some members of the new school board say Burns overstepped his bounds when he made his opinions against the philosophy of the board majority public.
The school board made the decision following a five-hour special closed-door meeting Tuesday night. Chief Academic Officer Donna Hargens will take over as acting superintendent in the interim.
"Del Burns served a distinguished career with the Wake County Public School System, having served as a teacher, principal and administrator for more than 30 years. However, on Thursday Feb. 18, Dr. Burns held series of media interviews where he voiced opposition to certain recent and proposed policy initiatives by this board," school board Chair Ron Margiotta said. "His choice to conduct these interviews was a poor decision and totally inappropriate in the opinion of this body. After careful consideration and discussion, the board has decided to place Dr. Burns on administrative leave at this time. Dr. Burns will remain available as necessary for consultation during the period of transition."
This was the third meeting in which the board has discussed Burns' employment.
Ann Majestic, the board's attorney, said Burns would receive his normal pay during the leave period.
