CHARLOTTE – The suspects accused of attacking and beating a UNC Charlotte professor in October 2008 entered their pleas in court Monday.
Tireese Scott, 20, pleaded not guilty and 18-year-old Maurice Weaver pleaded guilty. Both face robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill charges.
The victim, Narayan Dhakal is also in court, and has been called “a walking miracle” after he spent months in a coma because of his injuries. Police in uptown Charlotte found him beaten so badly he was unrecognizable, and it took them days to identify him.
Dhakal now lives in Alabama with his brother and sister-in-law, who take care of him. He has trouble walking and talking and suffers daily seizures. He said it’s prevented him from going home to his native country of Nepal.
"I never can go back,” Dhakal said. “I just stay here to get fully well."
Dhakal said what he wants most is to be able to go back to school.
Scott's co-defendants say he did the most damage to Dhakal. They say he stomped on the man after they'd finished robbing him. His case is expected to go to trial in June. Weaver is expected to testify.
