RALEIGH – The Wake County school board made no decision Tuesday regarding Superintendent Del Burns.

Some board members were not pleased with how he openly criticized their new initiatives shortly after announcing his resignation.

After three-and-a-half hours of deliberating in a special closed meeting, including 90 minutes last Tuesday, Burns was back in his usual spot for the start of the committee meeting.

For now, he'll stay until the end of June, which is what he wanted. Burns explained the timing of his resignation in an interview with News 14 Carolina a few weeks ago.

"There's no good time to leave the school system," Burns said. "Making the decision at this point allows the board time, if they act quickly, to put in place a process to have a superintendent for the school system at the opening of the 201011 school year."

Burns' contract would have allowed board members to end his employment early, but it would require them to pay his salary and benefits through the end of June anyway. That would have cost at least $135,000
