Whiteville High School senior Hunter Smith plays three positions for the Wolfpack. Smith is a catcher, third basemen, and pitcher. During the regular season, the right-hander led the team with 73 strikeouts. This is Smith's first playoff deep playoff run after spending his sophomore and junior seasons playing for East Columbus High School and his freshman year at Whiteville.

Spring training is in full swing for the Carolina Diamonds, the first professional softball team in the Carolinas. In addition to their home field at CMC Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis, they’ll play home games across North and South Carolina so fans everywhere can get in on the action.

Aric Almirola took the pole for the Coca-Cola 600 with a lap of 192.940 mph Thursday night, giving Richard Petty Motorsports a front-row sweep at Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR's longest race. Teammate Marcus Ambrose was second at 191.598 in qualifying for the Sunday night race.

Dale Carey hit a two-run home run and Miami snapped North Carolina's 14-game winning streak by taking a 5-3 victory at the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament. Carey's drive to left in the seventh inning on Thursday scored Stephen Perez, broke a 3-all tie and gave the sixth-seeded Hurricanes a valuable first victory at the four-day tournament.

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Mike Murphy has agreed to play in the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia next year. Murphy has been in the Carolina organization his entire career, spending the last three in the American Hockey League. He made his NHL debut this past season.

The Charlotte Bobcats coaching search continues with former N.C. State player and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan next on the interview list. Also believed to be in the hopper is former Utah Jazz bench boss Jerry Sloan. Several published reports say Sloan looks at the Bobcats job as “intriguing.”
