RALEIGH — Officials with the Federal Department of Education said they will investigate the Wake County Public School System for discrimination against students with Spanish-speaking parents.
A complaint was filed in June on behalf of three Latino students and their families that said they could not read important school documents because they were only released in English.
Their attorneys say the fact that the school did not provide the information in Spanish violates state and federal law. There is currently no information on when the investigation is expected to be completed.
Latino students make up 15 percent of the school district's population. In response to the complaints, school district representatives say they already offer Spanish language versions of most communication; both in person and online.
School officials say they will continue to work with the groups on the concerns.
