GREENSBORO -- One thing is different about the fabric Stephanie Teague uses to make her Pretty Birdie clothing -- it’s all eco-friendly.
"A lot of people, when they think of eco-friendly fashion, they might of more hippie clothing or granola clothing or things like that, but it's just changed dramatically,” she said.
The choice to use only eco-friendly fabric comes with a price.
"It is expensive to buy organic fabrics and they are not everywhere. I mean, I can't go to a fabric store, anywhere that I know of around North Carolina, and buy organic fabrics,” Teague said.
It's the same with buying a Pretty Birdie item. It’s a lifestyle choice made because the thought is that the fabrics used are better for the planet.
"I really think that people are looking specifically for organic, hand-made clothing that find me,” said Teague.
A former model turned fashion designer, Teague didn’t decide to go in this direction with her clothing for effect. It’s really an extension of who she is.
"I'm just kind of really laid back and a I guess a hippie at heart. I mean we try to live our lives as green as possible,” she said.
Choosing the type of fabric to use is one thing. Designing clothes that people want to wear and will buy is another. It took stephanie a while to get there.
"I literally had an aha moment one day, where I said, 'I'm just going to make clothes that I want to wear,'” she said.
After a couple of years of working from her home, Teague now has a workshop and retail space in Greensboro. While this venture might work better in a more populated location, she is hopeful that pretty birdie can find a customer base there.
"I think that there's cool enough people in Greensboro, women that are my customers, that it can work,” she said.
Regardless of where the sales come from, Teague is convinced that she has found her place.
"I finally believe in myself, like 'OK, I can do this' and this is something that I just am naturally able to do and this is what I'm supposed to do, I feel like,” said Teague.
