Lawmakers in the state House released the bulk of their proposals for next year's budget. The plans were laid out in multiple sub-committee meetings on Thursday and will be on the House floor for debate next week. Former UNC System President Bill Friday was released from UNC Hospitals Thursday. Friday was admitted to the hospital in critical condition last Wednesday. His family says his health improved slightly after he received a permanent pacemaker. He'll now enter an extended period of rehabilitation.

The body of a woman who lives in Wake County was found Wednesday more than 160 miles away, in Galax, Va., in her husband's truck. He's now in custody awaiting extradition back to North Carolina on murder charges.

It seems you can buy them anywhere and some say they are a responsible alternative to a credit and debit cards, but there is controversy surrounding pre-paid credit cards. Some say the cards are misleading, and tricked them into paying hidden fees. So the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau put together a panel Wednesday to come up with ways to better regulate them.

UNC Health Care and WakeMed announced a partnership Tuesday that would end their long-standing feud over Rex Hospital in Raleigh and boost mental health services in Wake County. WakeMed said it would drop its pursuit to purchase Rex Hospital and UNC Health Care will invest $40 million in mental health care in Wake County.

Jurors discovered the man accused of killing state Board of Education member Kathy Taft has a history of violence toward women Tuesday. The defendant's ex-wife, Jessica Foote, told jurors Williford tried raping her five days before getting arrested for Taft's homicide.

Actor Henry Winkler, best known for his role as as "The Fonz" from "Happy Days" stopped by the News 14 Carolina studios Tuesday. He was in the area to educate people about upper limb spasticity, or ULS. ULS is a condition that affects more than one million Americans, primarily stroke survivors. It causes muscle restriction and some patients lose the ability to use their arms and legs.

A House committee overwhelming approved a bill to provide compensation for victims of North Carolina's forced sterilization program. Rep. Larry Womble of Forsyth County asked the committee to put North Carolina on the right side of history and approve the bill, which provides $50,000 to victims.
