GREENSBORO — Demolition crews are hard at work, tearing down a section of the Glenwood neighborhood to make room for UNC Greensboro’s Spartan Village.
While the plan calls for the block to be leveled, group of volunteers are working to salvage what they can. Empty houses in the neighborhood are full of treasures for the Architectural Salvage of Greensboro.
“Mainly things like doors, windows, claw foot tubs, things like that, things period to the neighborhood,” said volunteer Cliff Ballard.
According to Ballard, in the Glenwood neighborhood homes the organization has been able to find a variety of vintage items that would end up in a pile of broken rubble if it were not for the efforts of the nonprofit.
“It is great for the history, its great for the environment, we're saving tons of material from the landfill. We're allowing people to shop our store and find parts for their homes that they can't find in the normal, Home Depot or Lowe's,” said Ballard.
Since demolition began a few weeks ago, volunteers have been combing through homes trying to salvage whatever they could. Thursday was a last ditch effort, to beat out the bulldozers and get those remaining artifacts.
“It was a quick rush and we knew we had a short time frame and we did what we could. We just appreciate them letting us get in here,” said Ballard.
While volunteers could not save it all, Ballard said they salvaged enough to show the rich history of this neighborhood. Everything the nonprofit salvages is taken to its store located on Bellemeade Street in downtown Greensboro.
