The National Association for Colleges and Employers says schools have cut career office budgets by an average of 16 percent, in the past year. Wake Forest University says that will only lead students on a path to nowhere. A report from the market research firm IRI says sales of white, granulated sugar are up 15 percent since 2009. Last year, Americans spent nearly $1.7 billion. The increase in white sugar sales comes as Americans shy away from artificial sweeteners. Sales of Splenda are down 40 percent since 2009, the study said, and Sweet'N Low purchases are off 16 percent.

NCDOT scheduled weekend shutdowns on westbound I-40 at the Forsyth County/Davie County line. Beginning May 31, crews will close a two-mile stretch up to three weekends to make repairs to the westbound Yadkin River bridge.

A 15-year-old driver will soon battle for the gold in the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150. Gray Gaulding will compete in the race on June 1 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem. Gaulding may not have his driver's license yet, but that's not keeping him from sitting behind the wheel of a race car which hits speeds of up to 160 m.p.h.

Bicyclists all over Winston-Salem have been hitting the roadways this week. The city has encouraged its residents to choose bicycling over driving to their destinations, whether it was to the local farmers market, to work or to the gym.

Police are reminding business owners to lock up their valuables after a string of burglaries on Battleground Avenue. They're investigating recent thefts at The Hub, Red T Golf Shop, Freedom House Thrift Store and New York Deli restaurant. Police are asking store owners to keep their eye out for anything suspicious.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department plans to stop responding to non-emergency medical calls. It started taking those calls 13 years ago to increase response time. However, authorities say firefighters responded to nearly 20,000 medical calls last year and as much as 70 percent of them were not emergencies.

A North Carolina company wants to build a solar farm on a former landfill in Mount Airy. The facility would be the granite city's third solar farm and make use of land that's been idle for decades. Mount Airy closed the 64 acre landfill off City View Drive after just a decade of use.

Davidson County commissioners have voted to move ahead with the first of three phases of a planned industrial park that could reach 1,100 acres. The 4-3 vote allows the Davidson County Economic Development Commission to begin talking with property owners, seek funding and work out other project details.
