APEX, N.C--It's a day that's known for food, fun, and fireworks, and perfect weather on this Fourth of July had boaters lining up to hit the waters.

"It's the first Fourth of July that we've been out here in a while," said Brooke Moody.

However, it's not just the sunshine and cool waters driving people to the lake. Low gas prices are also playing a major factor.

"It's especially expensive to fill up a boat and a car, so it worked out," added Moody.

Brooke Moody and her family are used to taking their three little ones on the lake and the dip in prices means more time for them to cruise around.

"Since gas prices were so high we were staying anchored longer, but now we can ride around and look for eagles and that sort of thing so it's fun," said Sue McGhee.

Filling up a boat is an expensive task. Costs can top more than $100 depending on the size.

"Thankfully the boat doesn't use too much gas. It's well worth it to get the family together and enjoy this beautiful weather," said Chuck Piccirillo.

However, despite the cost that comes with a day on the lake, many say it's nothing compared to the priceless time with family.

Right now the average cost for a gallon of regular gas is $3.18 in North Carolina. That's about 16 cents less that the national average. Boaters also try to get their gas before hitting the waters. Some say the cost can be almost twice the price if they fuel up at lakeside pumps.
