FORT MILL, S.C.-- Thousands of people across the state are celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, but officials are warning people to be safe as they have fun.

Some fireworks are illegal in North Carolina, but that doesn't stop thousands of people from crossing state lines to buy certain kinds of explosives. Leaders say taking the risk could come at a cost.

"Anything that's going to explode and launch into the air, that's very unsafe and more importantly, it's illegal in the state of North Carolina, where some kind of fireworks could be accepted in other parts of the county," said Cpt. Rob Brisley

Getting caught with fireworks is a misdemeanor offense, and violators could face fines for breaking North Carolina state laws.
