Family and Friends of a women found dead in her Raleigh apartment last week bid their final farewell Sunday in Elizabethtown. Melissa Dawn Huggins-Jones was found by her eight year old daughter Tuesday on Allister Drive in the North Hills area. Police are calling her death a homicide. Her funeral service was held at Elizabethtown Baptist Church.

A Fort Bragg soldier is charged with a hit and run Saturday morning that sent a teen to the hospital. The Fayetteville Observer reports it happened just after midnight on NC 210 near McCormick Bridge Road.

A Fayetteville man is dead after being hit by a car. Police say 52-year-old Donald Ovalle walked out into traffic on Yadkin Road near Santa Fe Drive around 9:00 Friday night.

A report from the market research firm IRI says sales of white, granulated sugar are up 15 percent since 2009. Last year, Americans spent nearly $1.7 billion. The increase in white sugar sales comes as Americans shy away from artificial sweeteners. Sales of Splenda are down 40 percent since 2009, the study said, and Sweet'N Low purchases are off 16 percent.

The defense rested shortly after the prosecution on Thursday in the Mario McNeill murder trial. McNeill did not take the stand. The jurors will return Tuesday for closing statements and will then begin deliberations.

The Cumberland County Health Department is working to contain a salmonella outbreak in the area. They say 18 people have shown signs of salmonella poisoning and four people have been hospitalized after eating at a popular restaurant in a Fayetteville hotel.

Mario McNeill, who is charged with raping and killing 5-year-old Shaniya Davis in 2009, said Tuesday he wants the full five-hour tape to be played. Prosecutors had planned to cut certain parts of it, including parts that included his criminal past, but McNeill disagreed despite the objections of his attorneys.

Furloughs for the Department of Defense civilian employees will begin July 8. Defense secretary Chuck Hagel made the announcement Tuesday at a town hall event in Alexandria Virginia. Over 600,000 employees will face 11 unpaid days off nationwide.

Geologist Heather Hanna told the court that she researched the soil where the body of 5-year old Shaniya Davis was found along with an in-depth analysis of any soil found on the wheel wells of the car of Mario McNeill as well as the gas and foot pedals inside the car.

Two people are back on dry land after being rescued from the Cape Fear River in Harnett County. Rescue crews were called out around 10 p.m. Monday because a boat was taking on water near the North Carolina Wildlife Ramp between Erwin and Lillington. The two people weren't injured.
