SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The national 9/11 flag made its way into Southport for the July 4th parade Monday. The flag was destroyed during the World Trade Center attacks, but thanks to a group of dedicated firefighters, it will be restored.

The crowds were able to sign up to help stitch a piece of the retired flag later in the day. The day held special meaning for wounded warriors. Military and public officials helped usher the flag in.

Ray Schroeder was a first responder at the World Trade Center on 9/11. The event was his first time seeing the flag since that day.

"I'm honored to have been able to be in the parade, to be able to touch the flag after seeing it go down. For me, it's an honor," said Schroeder.

The national 9/11 flag will now be taken to its next location in Tucson, Ariz.
