CORNELIUS -- The family whose homeowners association is threatening to fine them for displaying two flags has drawn local and statewide concern. The Dillons said that local and state leaders are showing their support.

The Dillons were ordered by their HOA to remove one of their two flags or face a $100 a-day fine. The Dillons are currently appealing the citation and awaiting a ruling.

In the meantime, Cornelius Mayor and North Carolina Senate District 41 candidate Jeff Tarte is supporting the Dillons at a local level and if elected, plans to propose legislation to help others in similar situations.

“In a polite way it is not allowing an HOA, an entity, or body to overreach their authority.” said Tarte. “This is overreaching in my opinion.”

Tarte's opponent in the North Carolina Senate race is John Aneralla. Aneralla said that proposing similar legislation is not his top priority if elected.
