The president of Belmont Abbey College is calling President Barack Obama's contraceptive compromise disingenuous and fake. Dr. Bill Theirfelder said the college will continue to move forward with its lawsuit. During a press conference Friday, Obama said his new plan will make insurance companies responsible for providing contraceptive coverage and not religious organizations.

Supporters at one Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary school are keeping a popular mentoring program alive. J.H. Gunn and other elementary schools are no longer a part of the “Right Moves For Youth” program, which provides mentoring and outreach programs. But just because the program's name and funding went away from some schools, it is staying afloat and thriving at J.H. Gunn.

A federal program could keep more deputies in Cabarrus County. Sheriff Brad Riley is proposing a new program to keep more deputies on Cabarrus County streets. The federal funding from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, could save the sheriff's office money and time.

Thirty-four new Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers graduated from the academy on Friday – and one of them is the result of a recruitment trip to Puerto Rico last year. Although CMPD admitted the trip didn't have the results they were hoping for, they're still happy to add a 16-year law enforcement veteran to the force. The new officers were just sworn in and are ready to patrol the streets of Charlotte. Among them is Luis Lopez. Lopez is the direct result of a recruiting trip CMPD took to Puerto Rico last May.

Some sleep sleep specialists are saying that getting just an hour less of sleep than recommended could lead to packing on some unwanted pounds. The new advice comes following the release of a study connecting the two, as well as lots of national attention being given to the issue.

A state transportation official told News 14 Carolina the fire on Bus No. 295 started in an electrical compartment just left of the driver's seat. It happened Wednesday afternoon in south Charlotte. All six students on board and the bus driver were able to make it out safely. The dramatic video of the bus fire made international news.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have named a suspect in Monday's shooting at Northlake Mall. Officers signed warrants for Carlton Ardrey, 25, on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon and possession of firearm by felon. Police say Ardrey shot Greg Tillery Monday as he walked to his car near Dick's Sporting Goods and Dillards.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus driver is being labeled a hero Thursday evening after she was able to get six small kids off of a bus shortly before it burst into flames. The incident happened Wednesday evening on Bearmore Drive in South Charlotte.

Time Warner Cable donated televisions to the Hospitality House of Charlotte. Employees spent part of Thursday afternoon installing and connecting all 22 guest rooms. Previously, the Hospitality House only had TV's in the common areas.

Shelby police now say a woman's teenage son conspired with a classmate to kill her. The attack happened last week at their home. Police arrested Lindsay Wood's 15-year-old son and his classmate, 16-year-old Miguel Lopez, earlier this week. They're both charged with attempted murder of the 32-year-old woman and conspiring to commit murder.

A new group is again making push for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to be decentralized and broken up into smaller, stand-alone districts. Parents have begun a petition drive in the hopes the measure could get momentum for state lawmakers to consider. The group has spent months researching and writing a proposal that would create three separate districts with smaller school boards and superintendents in each.

Running marathons, running marathons in every state, and running more than 100 total marathons isn't quite enough for Bob Weeks. He now plans to run across the state to help wounded veterans. Weeks is training for the run of his life. In May, he plans to run across North Carolina in an effort to raise money for Wounded Warriors.
