JACKSONVILLE, NC – The USO of North Carolina Jacksonville and Kangaroo Express came together for a good cause Saturday.

It was part of this year's Salute Our Troops campaign with organizers hosting a “Roo Carnival.”

Officials say the effort raises money for groups including the USO and the National Guard Fund.

The event included activities for children and entertainment as well as food, drinks and prizes.

Organizers say the carnival is one way of reminding the public of the many sacrifices our nation's soldiers, take while fighting for our nation's freedom.

“They are defending our freedom. and they are putting themselves in harms way and their families sacrifice and awful lot. So, it's just the right thing to do," said USO Director Deborah Fischer.

In 2011, Kangaroo Express stores raised $2.5 million to support military-related non-profits.
