CHAPEL HILL – Triangle Transit will start training Tuesday for a new pilot program that allows buses to travel on the shoulders of I-40 to bypass traffic jams.

The Buses on Shoulders System, or BOSS, is the first of its kind in the state.

Passengers should be able to start using it July 16. It will be used on four routes: the Chapel Hill Express, Route 800 from Chapel Hill to the Regional Transit Center via The Streets at Southpoint, Route 700 (which goes from Durham to the Regional Transit Center), and Shuttle 42 between the Regional Transit Center and IBM.
