CHARLOTTE -- The advertising battle is just beginning over two hotly contested congressional seats in North Carolina.

"The airwaves are just going to be completely over taken by campaign commercials," said Michael Bitzer, politics professor at Catawba College.

Five months out from November elections, both the Democrat and Republican congressional committees already each reserved more than $2 million in ad time.

Most of the money will target the 7th and 8th districts with some in the 11th District.

"[Larry] Kissell is one of our top most vulnerable democrat members in the entire country," said Andrea Bozek, spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Stephanie Formas, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee countered.

“Republicans continue to fool themselves in thinking that their out-of-touch Washington candidates can defeat battle tested Larry Kissell who has been focused on creating jobs and fighting Republican’s efforts to slash Medicare,”said Formas.

“It's pretty substantial, we’ve seen Democrats target more districts nationwide,” said Jonathan Kappler with the North Carolina Free Enterprise Foundation, who is tracking the media buys.

Kappler said of the 14 congressional seats targeted nationally by both parties two are in North Carolina.

“I think its an early indication that both parties are very much targeting these two districts in North Carolina as key to their ways to build a majority," said Kappler.

Bitzer said it's a huge commitment by Republicans to plan on outspending their opponents in two seats currently held by Democrats.

"Republicans put a really big bullseye on those two districts so they're getting their forces ready to make those probably the most competitive districts in the United States," said Bitzer.

Both Bitzer and Kappler agree we'll not only be seeing a lot more ads, but much more negative ads.

Republicans say $1.2 million was purchased in the Charlotte media market targeting Kissell's seat.

More than $500,000 in Raleigh and a $250,000 in Wilmington will target Rep. Mike McIntyre's district.

Democrats made their ad buys a couple of months ago and the numbers are similar in all of those markets.
