GREENSBORO — Greensboro Police will start a new campaign to find illegal tint on car windows. Friday, officers kick off a week-long effort to track down drivers who break the law.

State law makes window tinting illegal when the total light transmitted through the front or side windows is 35 percent or less. Police will use marked and unmarked cars to set up checkpoints throughout the city.

Drivers who have tint that is too dark could face a $290 fine.

"You can normally go to the Highway Patrol and you can go and get it checked there. If it passes, they will give you a certified card to put in your car. If it violates it, then you have 15 days to get it in compliance," said Officer Lester Prescod of the Greensboro Police Department.

Last year Greensboro Police gave out more than 100 citations for windshield or window tint violations.
