WINSTON-SALEM -- Thousands of children will find toys under the tree this Christmas thanks to a "Secret Santa" and the generosity of dozens of donors.
Santa made a large delivery of toys to The Salvation Army of Winston-Salem, which said the number of needy families was on the rise. A truck arrived at The Salvation Army Christmas Warehouse on Peters Creek Parkway full of thousands of toys, thanks to dozens of donors and Winston-Salem businessman Nathan Tabor who has been collecting toys for needy children for the last eight years.
"This year, I was like we're growing the number of toys we're getting,” said Tabor. “I need to have a better structure of how to distribute these."
Tabor said The Salvation Army was a logical choice for a partner and since then donations have increased five fold over last year.
"Two churches have participated. We had several businesses that participated,” said Tabor. “We had a party at our house on Saturday night. We had about 150 friends that came, that participated and then we collected donations and went to Walmart and purchased 52 carts full of toys."
Tabor and Salvation Army employees and volunteers unloaded more than 2,000 toys worth $17,000.
"Oh, it's a wonderful thing,” said employee Willie Johnson. “You know, the people is giving and caring.”
"Every single toy that we get really, truly, does make a difference in a child's life at Christmas." said Maj. Melody Davis.
Davis said the need for donations of toys was great last year and is even greater this year.
"Last year we had 2,070 families that we assisted for Christmas and this year we have 2,664 families,” said Davis. “So, when you think of that that's well over 1,000 more children than we served last year."
