HIGH POINT, N.C. — It was a usual Thanksgiving feast with all the sides this year at Open Door Ministries, but what was different this year were those serving the meals.

Instead of coming in town to play against Wake Forest and High Point University, the Mercer Women's Basketball team from Macon, Ga also took time out of their busy schedules to give back to their host community.

"We thought this was an awesome opportunity for our players to give back, no matter where we are in the America there's always people we can help and reach out to,” said Mercer Head Women's Basketball Coach Susie Gardner.

"It just feels really good to come out and help and just to be with my team, we're like a family too,” said Freshman guard Alicia Williams.

For most of the players it was their first time away from home during the holidays, serving meals and singing songs, not only making but as they say, being the difference. The team, consisting of 13 players and seven staff members said they know those feeding are getting a warm and nutritious Thanksgiving meal.

However the volunteers all agree they are gaining more in return.

"I went around to some of the tables and talked to people and they are just so happy to be here," said Williams.

Open Door Ministries provides immediate assistance to those in need of food, housing and emergency financial assistance. The Mercer Bears lost to the Demon Deacons Wednesday night. They play High Point University Friday at 7 p.m.
