GREENSBORO — The state has made some big cuts to a program that helps low-income people and families pay their energy bills in Guilford County.

The low-income energy assistance program went from a $2.3 million budget last year to only $640,000 dollars this year. However there are other programs available to help people in need, including the emergency assistance program.

Applicants that qualify can ask for help at one of the Department of Social Services' partner agencies. Greensboro residents must go to the Salvation Army center of Hope on Eugene St.

High Point and Jamestown residents must go to:

• Open Door Ministries
• Helping Hands
• The Salvation Army
• West End Ministries

"It can provide you with up to $300 per year for emergency heating assistance, based on your eligibility,” said Division Director for Guilford County Economic Services Steve Hayes.

Simple tips to keep warm safely, open curtains and blinds during the day to let sun in, and close them at night to keep out cold. Use extra blankets, keep your windows air-tight, and seal your doors with weather stripping.
